Visual Guide to Free-Motion Quilting Feathers by Natalie Bonner is a terrific resource for quilters wanting to improve machine quilting skills – especially those daunting feathers. The author loves machine quilting feathers! She distinguishes between precise, traditional heirloom feathers and more playful, free-form feathers – this book focuses on the latter.

Included in the book are sixty-eight modern feather designs for use in shapes such as pieced squares, half-square triangles, Flying Geese, and diamonds in blocks, borders, and setting triangles. Three methods for quilting are described: single feathers, bump back feathers, and curl feathers. Visual Guide to Free-Motion Quilting Feathers is an apt name; there are detailed step-by-step illustrations of the construction of each quilted feather in each shape. While the book is geared toward domestic machines, the designs also work well on longarm machines. Of particular interest is the information on marking and/or quilting with curved and straight acrylic rulers. I am eager to add this book to my quilting library and get started putting a feather in my quilting cap!
