Recently, I was introduced to this author, her books, and fabric by a dear friend who was captivated by her work. I agree, her artistry is alluring. A new author to Connecting Threads, Saito’s books are now finally available to us and there are several. This quilt artist is very accomplished and her work exquisite. Her books are really geared toward the intermediate and advanced quilters. The book is a bit unusual given the manner in which it is compiled. The front end of the book provides a gallery of beautiful pictures of all projects. This is followed by a recommended notions and tools section and finished with detailed illustrations and instructions for each project.

The author omits obvious information assuming the piecer and appliquér come with a more than basic knowledge of quilting. Originally written in Japanese, the projects were designed using the metric system, however, has been translated giving standard US measurements. All this means is that the constructed projects will be sized slightly different than the originals in the book.

The images are a sight to be seen. Absolutely gorgeous detailing, it is mesmerizing to take in all the fine embroidery, appliqué, and quilting. The style borders primitive, but the perfection in needlework does not allow it to cross into that folksy look. She uses homespuns, yarn dyed fabrics, and taupes in all of her designs. These particular fabrics are essential in creating her particular look. Many of the appliqués are fussy cut to provide dimensional teasers for the eye. She actually designed dimensional flowers to further tantalize you in this book.

I am very much looking forward to building my own Yoko Saito project which will be a blog post in the future. Yes, a challenge to say the least, but what a satisfying one!
