Zen Chic Inspired by Brigette Heitland appeals to me both as a quilter drawn to innovative quilts with graphic appeal and as an interior design enthusiast with eclectic tastes. The author, a trained interior and textile designer from Germany, is the owner of Zen Chic – a quilt company known for modern fabrics and quilt designs. Her quilting experience also includes teaching quilting, blogging, running an online quilt shop and a long-arm machine quilting business, and making quilts for American and European magazines. This combination of interior, textile, and quilt design expertise results in a fascinating quilt book where quilts are designed to the enhance and complement a specific room while becoming a focal highlight in it.
The photos in Zen Chic Inspired are amazing! Each section starts with an image of a room interior simply furnished with modern furniture, clean lines, and crisp, clean colors. The idea is to look at the room as whole – the shapes, colors, lines, and styles – and to incorporate these elements into a quilt design to use in the room. Color selection is aided by taking a photograph, and perhaps pixelating it. There is a quilt pattern for each room – and I want to make at least three of them!
Even if your home décor tastes don’t encompass modern European design or even come close, the basic concept of the author’s approach is still useful. The concept of having a quilt fit harmoniously into a room because it was made specifically for that room is an interesting one. Zen Chic Inspired offers the reader choices: instruction in designing a quilt for a room and several diverse, attractive quilts to be adapted to one’s own space. Truly inspiring either way!
