Amanda Jean Nyberg, of Crazy Mom Quilts, is known for using scraps--itty bitty scraps--in her colorful modern scrap quilts. One of my favorites is her Bright Birch Trees pattern with numerous small scraps forming the birch bark of stylized trees. Being a scrappy quilter with a large collection of scraps, I was excited to review her new book: No Scrap Left Behind. Amanda Jean did not let me down! Her new book has sixteen quilted projects to help me make a dent in my scrap pile. Plus, there are suggestions for sorting and storing scraps and selecting color schemes for quilts.

I was particularly drawn to the Flip Side section showing the fronts of quilts and their pieced backs. The author says she makes two-sided quilts - with the backs featuring coordinating fabrics, leftover scraps, and orphan blocks. As a quilter who believes an attractive quilt back is important, I was inspired to add more piecing and use up more scraps in my backings.

No Scrap Left Behind offers several quilt ideas. Though not weekend projects due the small size of the scraps, most are simple to construct. With my increasing love of miniature piecing, my favorite quilt – and the one I am eager to start on – is Mini Nines. The finished blocks are 3-1/2” with each square in the Nine-Patches finishing at 1/2”. Crazy, but fun! All of the projects in the book are made with bright, colorful prints and solids, but I may make mine in neutrals. For those interested in smaller projects, Amanda Jean also includes several fun scrappy pincushions; so, save those scraps and enjoy this book!
