Great Granny Squared
Techniques: piecing, embroidery, general sewing
Great Granny Squared by Lori Holt is charming. As someone who learned to crochet before anything else, these patterns bring it all full circle. The crochet-inspired patterns feel very folk American, truly something you would snuggle under at Grandma’s house. The quilt designs lend themselves to any kind of scrap fabrics you happen to have in your stash - you can make these quilts as exuberant or as subtle as you wish. I can imagine making these quilts in many different colorways and in everything from solids to prints to batiks.
Lori Holt is also very clever in her use of scraps, as the Bonus Quilt and the Great Granny Quilt Label can be made from scraps left over from the Great Granny Quilt. She includes patterns for quilt labels that are works of art in themselves, and the pillow and wall hanging are quick to put together for a special occasion or gift. Her pattern instructions are very organized and clear, and she includes lots of diagrams. I look forward to making a Great Granny Quilt of my own!
