App 2 Appliqué appeals to me because I am drawn to positive-negative blocks and quilts – where the colors and/or color values alternate for the same design. Diane Hire, a celebrated quilter, teacher, and author, is known for her wild color choices and exciting approach to quilt design. In App 2 Appliqué, she demonstrates how to take a design, perhaps something geometric or a stylized floral design, and appliqué both the cut out shapes and the background from which they are cut onto other fabrics to repeat the design. The beauty of her technique is how the designs flow into each other between blocks even as the colors change. The colorful examples in the book utilize cottons, Dupioni silk, and wool. Another valuable feature of App 2 Appliqué is the discussion of various appliqué methods and the use of embroidery and beads to embellish the appliqué. One can use doodled drawings or the attractive designs provided in the CD at the back of the book. I am eager to try my hand at a wall hanging with four blocks just to get started – but the creative possibilities are vast!
