Beginner Friendly Quilts: The Best of Quilty is a Fons & Porter book featuring a dozen easy quilts - from the Quilty magazine - suitable for beginners, and designed with a modern slant. Because it is geared to the novice quilter, Beginner Friendly Quilts includes instructional sections about accurate cutting, piecing, easy machine quilting, and binding. These are supplemented by online video tutorials. The book also appeals to me as a seasoned quilter because there are several clever designs suitable for teaching quilting to a new quilter or making a quick quilt for gift giving. Since the majority of quilts are scrappy, I get to use up part of my significant fabric stash.
One of my favorites is the Chevron & On quilt on the book cover, inspired by a houndstooth pattern. This dynamic quilt is a great way for a beginner to master HSTs (Half-Square Triangles); it is also a versatile, scrappy quilt for any level of quilter. Checkers is another scrappy, simple quilt with a lot of visual interest due the 16-patch blocks and piano key border. Dream Girl, with its scrappy Four-Patch blocks set on-point, is a great way to learn basic sashing and setting triangle techniques. Amelia, a paper pieced quilt with airplane blocks, would be a perfect lap quilt for my elderly father who used to fly us all over the country in our small airplane. Beginner Friendly Quilts is a handy and inspirational addition to a quilter’s library, regardless of skill level.
